TfL Enabling works to prepare Oxford Street to become traffic free between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street.  

We have received the following from TfL regarding the works they have completed, the work currently underway, and the work they intend to carry out. They say:

“Where we are working at night, our working hours are 22:00 to 05:00 only.

Works underway or scheduled

We are currently or will shortly be working in the following locations:

  • Great Portland Street – this a shared worksite with a utility company, who are currently on site. Once their works are complete, we will remove traffic islands from Great Portland Street, near the junction of Great Castle Street. We expect to complete our works by 27 September 2026. We will work during the day on weekdays. Our site safety barriers will be in place throughout the day and night. There is no right turn from Oxford Street to Great Portland Street while works are taking place. Great Portland Street is southbound only for vehicles and cycles between Great Castle Street and Oxford Street. 

  • Updated: Oxford Street’s junction with Great Portland Street: between 28 September and 16 October 2026 we will remove part of the central island on Oxford Street to enable new bus movements, and provide a new pedestrian crossing in future. We will work during the day on weekdays. Our site safety barriers will be in place throughout the day and night. There will be no right turn from Oxford Street into Great Portland Street while works are taking place. Great Portland Street will be open northbound only for vehicles and cycles between Great Castle Street and Oxford Street. Additionally:

    • Between 28 September and 16 October eastbound bus routes 98, 390, N8, N25, N98 and N207 on Oxford Street will follow diversions.

    • Between 28 September and 16 October routes 55 and N55 will start their routes from Stop Tottenham Court Road Station/New Oxford Street (Y) on New Oxford Street

    • Between 28 September and 16 October routes 73 and N73 will start their routes from Stop ‘Goodge Street Station' (A) on Tottenham Court Road

    • Full details of bus diversions by route are now available onhttps://tfl.gov.uk/bus/status

  • Updated: Great Castle Street (East) and Regent Street: we are on site re-aligning the kerb at Great Castle Street (East). There is no access to Regent Street from Great Castle Street (East) while we work. Access for loading and unloading is maintained. We expect to complete our works by 5 October 2026. 

  • Updated: Duke Street: On 28, 29 and 30 September 2026 we will:

    • We will extend the existing taxi rank near Duke Street’s junction North of Oxford Street to 39.8 meters by replacing the existing parking bays.  

    • South of Oxford Street, on Duke Street we will replace one general parking bay with a new disabled parking bay.

    • While we are working at the above locations the parking and taxi bays will be suspended. We will be working during the day only (8am to 5pm)

  • New: Balderton Street, Bird Street & Woodstock Street – from 28 September to 2 October 2026 we will be installing safety bollards on these streets. We will be working during the day (8am to 5pm). While we are working:

    • There will be no vehicle access to Balderton Street from North Row. Vehicle access to Balderton Street will be via Brown Hart Gardens

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Bird Street from Oxford Street. Access to Bird Street from Barrett Street maintained. Access to properties maintained.

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Oxford Street from Woodstock Street.

    • Please note we may complete these works by 1 October.

  • New: Lumley Street, Marylebone Lane East, Dering Street - from 2 October to 7 October 2026 we will be installing safety bollards on these streets. We will be working during the day (8am to 5pm).While we are working:

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Oxford Street from Lumley Street.

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Oxford Street from Dering Street.

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Oxford Street from Marylebone Lane East (former Debenham’s site). Pedestrian access to Oxford Street provided via Marylebone Lane West (Bond Street station exit)

  • New: Marylebone Lane West, Old Cavendish Place from 8 October to 13 October 2026 we will be installing safety bollards on these streets. We will be working during the day (8am to 5pm).While we are working:

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Oxford Street from Marylebone Lane West (Bond Street station exit). Pedestrian access to Oxford Street via Marylebone Lane East (former Debenham’s site) maintained. The Bond Street station exit will remain open but pedestrians wanting to access Oxford Street will be diverted to Marylebone Lane East.

    • There will be no pedestrian access to Oxford Street from Old Cavendish Place. 

Works to be scheduled 

These works are being scheduled, and we will confirm their dates and times when the necessary work permits are finalised: 

  • James Street: we expect to close James Street at its junction with Oxford Street, including removal of vehicle access to James Street between Barrett Street and Oxford Street  

  • Great Portland Street (between Great Castle Street and Market Place): we will install bus stands and remove a taxi bay. 

  • Junction of Wigmore Street, Portman Square, Orchard Street: we will be providing a road markings and signals changes to enable right turns from Orchard Street into Wigmore Street for vehicles ahead of Oxford Street becoming traffic free   

  • Public realm measures: Implementation of temporary urban realm along Oxford Street.  

Works Completed

We have completed works in the following locations:

  • Binney Street: we have installed double yellow lines at Binney Street’s Junction with Oxford Street, replacing a section of parking bays 

  • Weighhouse Street (Binney Street to Gilbert Street): we have marked new ‘give way’ lines, giving priority to vehicles on Weighhouse Street 

  • Gilbert Street (Weighhouse Street to Brook Street only): we have re-lined road markings on this section of Gilbert Street to operate two-way for vehicles in the future, including the removal of a general parking space near the junction of St Anselm's Place. Traffic on this section of Gilbert Street continues to travel one-way southbound until we carry out additional works on James Street. We will write to properties ahead of this change and provide a further update. 

  • Great Castle Street (west) and Regent Street – we have re-aligned the kerb at Great Castle Street (West)

  • Margaret Street (Regent Street and Great Portland Street) – we have moved an ambulance bay 3m west of its current location and removed existing taxi bays.

  • Margaret Street (between John Princes Street and Regent Street) – we have extended an existing taxi rank by 6m and installed a new bus stand on the southern side of Margaret Street.  

  • Marylebone Lane – we have installed double yellow line and double kerb markings restricting loading at all times on Marylebone Lane’s eastern side.

  • Market Place – we have re-lined markings to replace four parking bays with three disabled parking bays

Please note earlier this year we completed works to provide bus stops and stands in Wigmore Street and Cavendish Place as well as initial changes to provide relocated general and disabled parking bays on Wigmore Street, Duke Street and Wimpole Street.
