Arthur Onslow
1691 - 1768. The Speaker of the House of Commons for thirty-one years lived in a house on this site which was subsequently occupied by Crosse and Blackwell pickle manufacturers. It was demolished in 1924.

Sir Joseph Banks
1743 - 1820. English botanist lived in a house on this site. He travelled with Cook, visited Newfoundland and was president of The Royal Society from 1778 - 1819. The Linnaean Society also met here from 1820 1857.
