Former Portuguese Embassy and residence of Marquess of Pombal, (Sebastião José de Carvalho e Mello 1699 -1782). Pombal was the statesman responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon after the earthquake in 1775.

John Hunter  
1728 - 1793. Scottish surgeon and anatomist who pioneered many surgical operations. Brother of William Hunter (See Great Windmill Street). There is a weathered statue of John Hunter in Leicester Square.

Sir Morell Mackenzie
1837 -1892. English physician and throat specialist who founded the first throat hospital in the country, here in Golden Square, in 1865.
