Site of Turk's Head Tavern. Where Dr.Samuel Johnson 1709 - 1784, English lexicographer, critic and wit, along with Joshua Reynolds 1723 -1792 founded The Club (later The Literary Club) in 1764. Other founder members being Oliver Goldsmith, Edmund Burke, Charles James Fox, David Garrick and of course, Johnson's biographer, James Boswell.
Edmund Burke
1729 - 1797. Irish-born British politician. One of the oldest plaques around. He denounced the French Revolution but defended the American colonists and is regarded as one of the greatest Conservative theorists.
Paul de Lamerie
1688 - 1751. French silversmith to King George I and II had his home and workshop here.
John Dryden
1631 - 1700. Native poet and dramatist. Poet Laureate in 1668. Another of the oldest of all London plaques.
