Westminster Kingsway College threatened with closure
How many people who go shopping in Berwick Street know that tucked away in Peter Street there is a college? The building, Pulteney Schools, was opened in 1880 and has had a colourful history teaching Soho children, residents, workers and refugees ever since. For many of today's Soho residents Pulteney School and Pulteney College (renamed Westminster College in 1974) was THEIR school. The governing body, however, are now considering closing it, which will end over a hundred years of community education in Soho.
The college has passed through the hands of several government bodies over the years: the London School Board, the LCC, the GLC/ILEA, and an inner London borough. Since April 1993 it has been a corporation and the courses are partly funded by the Learning and Skills Council. Since 2001 it has been known as Westminster Kingsway College.
Whoever has owned this historic building, Peter Street has remained a Soho institution, which reflects the vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere of our unique neighbourhood. We hope that all visitors to the Soho Society Website will support our campaign to keep the education of Soho people in Peter Street for the next hundred years.
